Headshots - What to wear?

"What should I wear?" is probably the most asked question of any photographer. This guide will help you choose the best outfit and styling for your upcoming headshot. I have a few simple rules to help you look and feel your best!

RULE #1 - KEEP IT SIMPLE:
Solid staples in a neutral color pallet or small patterns photograph best. Avoid things like bright neon, logos, and big, busy patterns. Neon colors can reflect their shades back onto your skin giving you an unnatural glow. Layering bright colors under dark neutrals (like a colorful shirt under a black jacket) is a great way to incorporate color into your look without going too bright. Choose something "business casual" that you would wear to a meeting with a customer or your boss, or to an interview.

RULE #2 - DRESS LIKE YOURSELF:
Your headshot photo shoot is not the time to try out a drastically new style of hair, makeup, or clothing. If you want to change it up, do something small - a new shirt or accessory, a fresh haircut, or a new shade of lipstick - but keep it in the realm of what you normally like to wear.

RULE #3 - ACCESSORIZE IF YOU'D LIKE:
Accessories are a great way to personalize your look. A hat, like a well-fitted cowboy hat or fedora (not a ball cap) is a nice touch. Jewelry is also a great option, but keep it to one or two small pieces that don't compete for attention. Scarves, should be on the smaller side, and if you decide to wear a tie, make sure it compliments your outfit and is tied correctly. Suit jackets and well-fitted cover ups are also nice.

RULE #4 - CHECK THE FIT & FINISH:
Ensure that your clothing is fitted properly and ironed or steamed so it looks crisp and fresh. Avoid clothing and accessories that fit too baggy or bulky.
