"What should I wear?" is probably the most asked question of any photographer. This guide will help you choose the best outfit and styling for your upcoming headshot. I have a few simple rules to help you look and feel your best!
RULE #1 - KEEP IT SIMPLE:
Solid staples in a neutral color pallet or small patterns photograph best. Avoid things like bright neon, logos, and big, busy patterns. Neon colors can reflect their shades back onto your skin giving you an unnatural glow. Layering bright colors under dark neutrals (like a colorful shirt under a black jacket) is a great way to incorporate color into your look without going too bright. Choose something "business casual" that you would wear to a meeting with a customer or your boss, or to an interview.
RULE #2 - DRESS LIKE YOURSELF:
Your headshot photo shoot is not the time to try out a drastically new style of hair, makeup, or clothing. If you want to change it up, do something small - a new shirt or accessory, a fresh haircut, or a new shade of lipstick - but keep it in the realm of what you normally like to wear, and only pick one.
RULE #3 - ACCESSORIZE IF YOU'D LIKE:
Accessories are a great way to personalize your look. A hat, like a well-fitted cowboy hat or fedora (not a ball cap) is a nice touch. Jewelry is also a great option, but keep it to one or two small pieces that don't compete for attention. Scarves, should be on the smaller side, and if you decide to wear a tie, make sure it compliments your outfit and is tied correctly. Suit jackets and well-fitted cover ups are also nice.
RULE #4 - CHECK THE FIT & FINISH:
Ensure that your clothing is fitted properly and ironed or steamed so it looks crisp and fresh. Avoid clothing and accessories that fit too baggy or bulky.
What to Wear?
QUESTION #1: WHAT COMES WITH MY HEADSHOT SESSION?
In general, we will spend 10-30 minutes together and will take a variety of images from different poses, angles, and expressions (i.e. smiling, serious, and everything in between). Then, you will select your favorite three to five images from a proofing gallery, and I will edit them to perfection! You will receive high-resolution and web-sized digital copies of your images, in both black & white, and color finishes. If a group shot of the entire team is requested, this can be added to our session for an additional charge. Specifics will be discussed before booking.
QUESTION #2: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION?
Your session can be done on site with a solid backdrop, an organic backdrop (like an office setting or coffee shop), or outdoors. I utilize a portable lighting system that allows me the flexibility to photograph you or your team anywhere! In general, I don't charge extra for travel or outdoor shoots, unless your desired location requires a long drive, is outside of the city, or has access fees or admission. If long travel is required, an additional fee will be included in your invoice. We will discuss location before booking.
QUESTION #3: HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY FINISHED IMAGES?
After your session, you will receive an online proofing gallery where you will choose your favorite three to five images. After you've chosen your proofs, I will edit each photo individually. This entire process can take anywhere from two to eight weeks, depending on the size of your session or group. Sessions with a large team will take much longer to complete than an individual session or smaller group. If you'd rather let me pick the final images, that is also an option
QUESTION #4: EDITING AND TOUCHUPS - YOU'LL FIX THAT, RIGHT?
My goal as a photographer is to capture you in an authentic way. My philosophy is to keep editing as natural as possible and to help everyone looks and feel their best in their headshot. Things like blemishes, stray hairs, or a loose thread are removed. I brighten eyes and lightly smooth skin, but leave texture and features intact. I don't do body or facial modifications, or heavy filtering because I feel like it takes away from the natural beauty and unique character that everyone possess!
QUESTION #5: HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Sessions begin at $375 (+ tax) per individual, and groups of 2 or more are $175 (+tax) each; that includes session setup and teardown, the session itself, post-production editing, three to five finished images (in color and black & white), and personal usage license for the individual. Commercial licensing is available for an additional fee. Large groups of 10 or more individuals are eligible for special discounted rates - Contact me and we'll discuss!
